Winning the Workforce Game

Director's Chair

I WANT TO give a big shout-out to James Morgan and Clint Hankinson, who together produce our monthly newsletter. Each month, Jim edits and Clint designs a lineup of quality content that we hope you look forward to receiving, and from which you get some professional utility and benefit—not to mention enjoyment.

Reviewing the articles for February, I couldn’t help but remember our oldest children playing the first computer game, Pong, on our new Commodore 64. I think the next evolution was the Atari with the joy stick. Evolving through a couple more gaming systems, and spending a significant investment of time with Dungeons and Dragons, our oldest son migrated from a gaming joy stick to a very expensive fighter jet—and that’s before you could fly them virtually.

When we talk with employers about the kinds of employees they’re looking for, most all of them emphasize the importance of critical thinking, problem solving ability, communication and leadership skills, and being a team player. My generation used team sports and extra-curricular activities like clubs to develop those skills. Those are still relevant, especially for communication and leadership ability, and for being a team player, but today’s gaming platforms take it to a whole other level. Recruit the best!

Thanks, and we welcome your feedback.
