Job Title: Recruiter & Career Coach
Employer: Apprenticely
My Apprenticeship Journey: From Zero Programming Experience to Data-Driven Confidence
When I started my apprenticeship, I had no prior experience in programming or data analytics. My background wasn’t in computer science, and the idea of learning tools like Python, SQL, and Power BI seemed daunting. But thanks to the guidance and patience of my teacher, Don Walker, I was able to navigate the learning process. Don’s support made all the difference—whether I was stuck on a problem or needed encouragement, he was always there to help me through.
During the program, I learned how to create data visualizations, analyze datasets, and apply new techniques to solve real-world problems. One of the biggest revelations for me was realizing that even without a technical background, I could pick up these skills with dedication and the right guidance.
In my current role as a recruiter and career coach, I also manage our Reskill Arkansas IT training program. This role requires me to work with a lot of data, and before my apprenticeship, I was limited to using basic Excel. Now, with my new skill set, I approach data in a completely different way. I can identify which data is most valuable, determine how to use it effectively, and make a greater impact through improved processes.
The apprenticeship not only elevated my technical skills but also boosted my confidence in my ability to tackle new challenges. It taught me that it doesn’t matter where you start—what matters is your willingness to learn, work hard, and believe in yourself.
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I encourage you to take that leap of faith. You can learn new skills, overcome doubts, and achieve things you never thought possible. As long as you’re willing to put in the effort, you can do hard things too.
